The Story Behind The Site
In July of 2008 I was at a family gathering and my relatives began discussing the presidental election and taxes. After listening for a few minutes, two things became clear:
- No one had any idea how much they paid in taxes.
- No one knew how the federal government spent their money.
This really bothered me. On my drive home, I decided to do something about it. I came up with the idea to build a web site that allowed ordinary citizens to type in their income and get an itemized statement showing how the federal goverment spent their tax dollars.
The next day, I discussed the idea over lunch with my business partner, Jason Bukowski. We both thought is was an exciting idea and decided to give it a shot! I did some research online and found the data we needed. Jason whipped up a prototype of the site. After a bit of testing, we were satisfied that even though our numbers wouldn't be 100% accurate, we could build a site that would be a powerful educational tool.
Next, I created a wireframe of the user interface, registered the USATaxDollars.com domain name, and contacted our friend Jonathan Longnecker at FortySevenMedia.com about lending a hand with the design of the site. He agreed to work with our team at Fuscient. A couple weeks later, the site was ready to launch!
Our hope is that USATaxDollars.com will help everyday citizens understand how much they pay in taxes, how the money is spent, and motivate them to become informed voters. If you have any suggestions on how to improve the site, please send us a message.
